ID Tip: Massive, heavy, elongated with a tall spire. Young ones are bright orange. Florida's state shell since 1969. You'll know it when you see it.

Junonia Shell

Scaphella junonia

📏 3–5 inches

ID Tip: Smooth, elongated with a pointed spire and distinctive rows of brown square spots. The holy grail of AMI shelling. Local papers used to run photos of lucky finders!

🌊 AMI Shelling Tips

Best time: Low tide at dawn — shells wash up overnight and haven't been picked over yet.
📍Best spots: Bean Point (north tip), Bayfront Park, and Coquina Beach south end near the jetty.
🌀After storms: The best rare finds (Junonia, Horse Conch) wash up after storms churn the deep water.
⚠️Leave living shells: Brown sand dollars and shells with animals inside must be returned to the water.
🎒Bring: A mesh bag or bucket, water shoes, and sunscreen. A small shovel helps for buried shells.
📜Florida law: You may collect up to 2 gallons of empty shells per person per day for personal use.

Native Peoples

Timucua, Calusa & Tocobagan tribes

Long before tourists discovered Anna Maria Island's white sand beaches, the Timucua people made this 25,000-year-old barrier island their home around 1000 AD. The Calusa and Tocobagan tribes also used the island for fishing, hunting, and foraging — building a rich culture sustained by the Gulf's plentiful waters.

These mound-builder tribes were responsible for a vast system of estuaries throughout historic Manatee County. Their tools were the very shells that still wash upon AMI's shores today — the same shells visitors now collect as souvenirs.

💡

The Timucua used shell tools and built shell mounds still visible along Florida's coast today.

AMI Safety Tips

🌊

Rip Currents

If caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore — not against the current. Signal for help by waving your arms.

Lightning

Florida has the most lightning strikes in the US. When you hear thunder, leave the water immediately. Wait 30 minutes after the last thunder before returning.

🦈

Marine Life

Shuffle your feet when wading to avoid stingrays. If stung, soak in hot water (not scalding). Jellyfish stings: rinse with seawater, not fresh water.

🐢

Sea Turtle Nests

From May–Oct, sea turtles nest on AMI beaches. Never disturb nests, hatchlings, or nesting turtles. Lights visible from the beach disorient hatchlings — keep beach lights off at night.

🐬

Manatees

Manatees are federally protected. It is illegal to touch, feed, or harass them. If you see one in distress, call FWC at (888) 404-3922.

☀️

Heat & Sun

Gulf Coast sun is intense. Apply SPF 30+ every 2 hours, stay hydrated, and seek shade during peak hours (10am–4pm). Know the signs of heat exhaustion.

Getting around Anna Maria Island — on-island rides, airport shuttles & rideshare

Anna Maria Island is about 30 minutes from Sarasota Bradenton Airport (SRQ) and one hour from Tampa International (TPA). On the island, the Monkey Bus and free Trolley are the easiest ways to get around without a car. Private car services are the most reliable option for airport transfers — especially for early morning or late-night flights. Book in advance during peak season.
