The Pine Avenue Stroll
Pine Avenue is fully walkable end-to-end in about 10 minutes. Start at the Gulf beach access at the west end, walk east past the shops and restaurants, and end at the City Pier on Tampa Bay. Look for the colorful Adirondack chairs along the way. The Historic City Jail (circa 1920s) at the Historical Society is a quirky free stop.

ID Tip: Tiny fan-shaped bivalve. Watch for live ones digging back into wet sand after a wave washes over them.

ID Tip: Perfectly symmetrical fan shape with 32–36 evenly-spaced radial ribs. One of the easiest shells to identify.

ID Tip: Flat, disc-shaped with a 5-petal flower pattern on top. IMPORTANT: If it's brown and fuzzy — it's alive! Put it back.

ID Tip: The only Florida shell that regularly spirals LEFT (counterclockwise) — the opposite of almost every other shell. Large, heavy, and unmistakable.

ID Tip: Chunky, heavy shell with a wide flared outer lip. Orange-brown color. Called 'fighting' because they use their pointed operculum to flip themselves over.

ID Tip: Massive, heavy, elongated with a tall spire. Young ones are bright orange. Florida's state shell since 1969. You'll know it when you see it.

The History of Anna Maria Island
From Timucua shell mounds to pirate treasure, baseball legends to Old Florida charm — over 1,000 years of stories on seven miles of barrier island.
Native Peoples
Long before tourists discovered Anna Maria Island's white sand beaches, the Timucua people made this 25,000-year-old barrier island their home around 1000 AD. The Calusa and Tocobagan tribes also used the island for fishing, hunting, and foraging — building a rich culture sustained by the Gulf's plentiful waters.
These mound-builder tribes were responsible for a vast system of estuaries throughout historic Manatee County. Their tools were the very shells that still wash upon AMI's shores today — the same shells visitors now collect as souvenirs.
The Timucua used shell tools and built shell mounds still visible along Florida's coast today.

Right on Pine Avenue, the AMIHS Museum is housed in the original 1920 icehouse. Tour Belle Haven cottage (built 1920, fell into the bay in 1926, rescued and restored), walk the mangrove path, and photograph yourself in the old 1927 jail — now a beloved tourist attraction with cheeky sayings on the bars.
